tree roots for extraction within listing building wall

Tree root extraction from listed building

River House, York

River House is a striking Grade II listed building in the heart of York, occupying a site with a rich social history – formerly home to the Yorkshire Gentlemen’s Club, the building now houses Savills and Pizza Express at ground floor level. Retaining the character and structural integrity of the original façade was paramount throughout our involvement.

The project centred on a particularly challenging piece of masonry work – the removal of a mature tree that had established itself within the fabric of the boundary wall. Over time, the root system had penetrated deep into the stonework, causing significant displacement and creating a real risk to the wall’s long-term stability. Extracting the tree without causing further structural damage required careful hand work and a methodical approach, carefully dismantling the affected sections before the root mass could be fully removed.

Once cleared, we rebuilt the wall in matching stone, replicating the original bond and profile to ensure the repair sat seamlessly within the existing structure. The result was a wall restored to full structural integrity, with no visible trace of the intervention – exactly what a building of this character and heritage demands.
